Since January 1, 2020 at the latest, everyone in Germany has been talking about the receipt. In line with the obligation to issue receipts, every retailer in the German market has since been obliged to offer customers a receipt after payment. To date, these receipts have been issued in paper form and are also made of environmentally harmful thermal paper, which is provided with toxic chemicals. We think it is time for a digital alternative and want to establish a legally compliant solution for the chaos of notes with anybill — especially for the sake of the environment. But how much receipt trash does German retailers actually produce? On average, 23.1 billion receipts are issued each year. That is around 1.9 billion receipts per month. With an average receipt length of 30 cm, 220 meters of receipts are printed every second in the entire German retail sector. That is about 1 kg of trash per second. This consumption of receipts per second can be compared to approximately twice the length of a soccer field. 13 km of receipts are issued per minute, which have an approximate weight of 58 kg. Extrapolated, it is 790 km of receipts per hour and thermal paper waste of 3.5 t, which corresponds to a pickup truck or the approximate weight of an Asian elephant. In German retail alone, approximately 6,923,430 km of receipts are issued, which corresponds to a weight of 30,432 t. The annual receipt weight can be related approximately to three times the weight of the Paris Eiffel Tower. The monthly consumption of receipts is an approximate distance of 576,952 km. To do this, we have to fly 1.5 times from Earth to the Moon to get a sense of how many receipts German retailers issue in kilometers on average per month. If you don't want to leave Earth, you can also travel around the Earth's equator around 14.5 times to illustrate the monthly consumption of receipts in German retailers alone. anybill: Eco-friendly solution and digital touch point to customer Paper-based receipts not only impact the environment, but also cost German retailers around 88.7 million € annually and around 6.7 million € per month. In addition to constantly replacing rolls of thermal paper, there are also printing expectations and printer exchanges, which enable automatic receipt issuance every day. With the environmentally friendly alternative from anybill, retailers in German retailers can reduce up to 33% of the receipt costs and also use the digital receipt for smart interactions with customers.
